Lakers Score 11 First-Half Goals in 12–0 Victory
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Finger Lakes turned its home match into a showcase of attacking depth, scoring 11 times before halftime en route to a 12–0 victory over visiting Clinton Community College Saturday afternoon.
The scoring started in the 4th minute when Germán Guzzi (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Imei) finished off a pass from Finn Atkinson (Warrington, England/Kings Leadership Academy Warrington). Moments later, Robin Giesing (Essen, Germany/Gymnasium-Essen-Werden) doubled the lead from Noah Gouveia Pflüger (Konstanz, Germany/Heinrich-Suso-Gymnasium), and Atkinson added a goal of his own in the 12th minute.
The Lakers then erupted for eight more before the break. Giesing struck again in the 23rd minute, followed by a Lennart Schaefer (Dortmund, Germany/Max-Planck-Gymnasium) penalty. Ojedayo, Zariouh, Schaefer, Bernardo Reffiel Del Castel (Sergipe, Brazil/Pró-mundo), and Ojedayo again in the 41st, rounded out the half for an 11–0 margin at intermission.
The second half brought one more tally, as Abdelali Zariouh (Zeeland, Netherlands/Scalda) scored his second of the match in the 64th minute off a feed from Schaefer to close the 12–0 result.
Daniel Ojedayo (Ibadan, Nigeria/Opicc) led the way with a hat trick and an assist. Giesing and Schaefer each scored twice, Zariouh added a brace, and Atkinson contributed a goal with three assists. Reffiel Del Castel chipped in with a goal and an assist as seven different players registered goals.
Goalkeeper Matt Walton (Birmingham, England/Walsall Academy) was untested in net, as the Lakers outshot their opponent 43–0, including 31 on frame.
The #6-ranked Lakers continue to make their mark statistically on the national stage. Robin Giesing (Essen, Germany/Gymnasium-Essen-Werden) leads NJCAA Division III in goals (12) and points (26) while ranking first in shots (27). Daniel Ojedayo (Ibadan, Nigeria/Opicc) stands third in goals (8) and points (17), second in shots (24), and joins Giesing as one of the most productive attackers in the country. Finn Atkinson (Warrington, England/Kings Leadership Academy Warrington) tops Division III in assists (8), with Bernardo Reffiel Del Castel (Sergipe, Brazil/Pró-mundo) sitting third (7).
As a team, Finger Lakes ranks first nationally in goals scored, shots, shots per game, shots on goal, assists, corner kicks, penalty kicks, shutouts, and game attendance.
