New Rochelle, N.Y. - The #2 Ranked Men's Volleyball team took to the court in New York City this weekend as they look to contend for the first official National Championship in NJCAA Men's Volleyball. They would lose the first game but then go on to win th next 4 capping off a 4-1 weekend.
Game 1 VS UCNJ
The Lakers dropped their season opener in straight sets to fifth-ranked UCNJ, 3–0. Ethan Bond (Phelps, N.Y. / Midlakes) led the way offensively with 10 kills on 18 swings, while also contributing two digs and a block. Dominick Alverado (York, PA. / Northeastern) and Jackson Blaszow (Chittenango) each added five kills, with Alverado also recording two blocks at the net.
Game 2 VS Monroe
Zach Sipos (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) came out of the gates hot in game two, finishing with 10 kills and a team-high 12 digs. Jackson Blaszow (Chittenango) also turned in a strong performance, recording 10 kills and eight digs. Cole Thomas (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Chittenango) directed the offense with 31 assists while adding eight digs on the defensive side. As a team, the Lakers were strong from the service line, tallying nine aces.
Game 3 VS Monroe University - Bronx
The Lakers came out strong in game three, turning in an impressive performance to defeat Monroe University–Bronx, 3–1. The Lakers were lead on offense by freshman outside Zach Sipos (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) who posted a team-high 13 kills while hitting an outstanding .524. Other contributors on offense were Ethan Bond (Phelps, N.Y. / Midlakes) and Jackson Blaszow (Chittenango) who had 12 and 10 kills respectively.
Turning in an all around performance was sophomore setter Cole Thomas (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Chittenango) who finished with 37 assists and five kills while hitting an impressive .556. He also had a tremendous day from the service line, registering six aces.
Game 4 VS Middlesex
In the Lakers 3-0 sweep of Middlesex, the Lakers were once again led by freshman outside Zach Sipos (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) who paced the team with 10 kills while hitting an impressive .348. Cole Thomas (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Chittenango) continued his all-around play, finishing with 23 assists and four kills. He also led the team with six aces and 12 digs. Ethan Bond (Phelps, N.Y. / Midlakes) was strong on the defensive end as well, recording 12 digs.
Game 5 VS Nassau
The Lakers would cap off a tremendous opening weekend with a hard fought 3-1 victory over third-ranked Nassau Community College.
The Lakers were lead by Ethan Bond (Phelps, N.Y. / Midlakes) who paced the team with 14 kills while hitting .393. Sophomore outside Jake Seklar (Rochester, N.Y. / Gates Chili) was another key contributor, finishing with 12 kills and three digs. Zach Sipos (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) would chip in with 8 kills and 4 digs. Jack Donovan (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) would do it all defensively for the lakers where he had 17 digs. Cole Thomas (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Chittenango) orchestrated the offense with 35 assists and also contributed six digs on the defensive end.
The #2 ranked Lakers will be back in action on February 9th when they host Roberts Wesleyan in their home opener.
