Lewis Breaks Steals Record in Conference Win
By Logan Weingartner
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College women's basketball team secured their 2nd consecutive win on Wednesday evening, moving to 5-6 on the season. An up-tempo style of offense, along with an aggressive style of defense, led to a commanding 59-37 victory over the Hornets of SUNY Broome.
Jazzmyn Lewis (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) was active in all parts of the game, recording a double-double with 13 rebounds and 10 steals. With 78 steals this season following tonight's game, Lewis would break the single-season record of 71 set in 2021. Lewis added in 9 points and 7 assists as well and was instrumental in the Laker victory.
Dalayla Alexander (Ellicottville, N.Y./Ellicottville) showcased a dynamic performance, putting up a team-high 15 points along with six rebounds. Kierra Shaughnessy (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) and Jade Roussell (Dundee, N.Y./Dundee) both provided a spark on the glass, with 12 and 8 rebounds respectively. The physical playstyle of Ella Robinson (Hallstead, P.A./Blue Ridge) got her to the charity stripe four times, where she converted on 75% of free throws – contributing to her point total of 11.
Of the Lakers' 59 total points, 24 of them came off turnovers. Their defensive intensity forced the Hornets into shooting just 30% from the field, and they have outscored their opponents 109-72 over the last two games.
The Lakers continue their homestand on Saturday, January 18th when they will take on the Saints of North Country Community College at 1 PM.
