Several Lakers Honored for Historic Regular Season
The Finger Lakes Community College men's soccer team capped off a historic season, finishing with a record of 11-5. The Lakers season will go down as one the programs best, and the Lakers were recognized for their regular season achievements, with head coach Vince Correa earning the honor of Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) Coach of the Year and record-breaking freshman forward Chuck Domm (East Rochester, N.Y./ East Rochester) earning MSAC Player of the Year honors.
"A recognition like this is something that our whole program is grateful for because it demonstrates that the work our guys are putting in is being noticed. Although the award is for Coach of the Year, it will be received as a "Coaches" of the year award for us. Coach (Mike) Domm and I approach the job as co-head coaches and we've put a lot of work into getting this team assembled. We are very lucky to be working with the student-athletes that we have because we demand a lot, and they continue to put in the work. They are a special group of guys," Correa said of the award.
Domm returned the high praise for Correa. "Vince grew up in the game, his dad was from Brazil and taught him everything about the game. He was a great player growing up. Vince and his dad brought the first sectional title to East Rochester. Part of what makes Vince so successful is he is likeable, and student-athletes love playing for Vince because he has an incredible way with people. We are lucky to have him here at FLCC," Domm said.
Chuck Domm broke the FLCC school record for goals scored (29) and total points in a season (69). Domm also led the nation and the NJCAA in regular-season scoring with his 29 goals in 16 games.
"Chuck is incredibly dedicated to the sport of soccer and his body. He eats right, trains hard and is a student of the game. Chuck is focused on his position on the field. He has the ability to score in the air and on the ground. There is nowhere he can't score in the 18. He knows how to put the ball away and is the same player all 90 minutes. He's like a machine," Mike Domm said.
Freshman midfielder Russell Domm (East Rochester, N.Y./ East Rochester) etched his name in the FLCC record books, tying the Lakers school record for assists in a season with 16. Russell Domm also led the nation in regular-season assists while adding nine goals with two game-winning tallies. He scored 34 points during the regular season.
"(Russell Domm) is one of the most talented players I've coached in the past 20 years. He is incredibly strong, fast and has the best shot I've ever seen. (His shot is "dangerous and fast moving, and he his incredible vision and ability to put the ball where it needs to be makes him a true playmaker and unselfish player," according to Mike Domm.
Freshman forward Evan Stevely (Rochester, N.Y./ Bishop Kearney) finished second to Chuck Domm in points scored in the MSAC (44), recording the fifth-most goals in a season in FLCC history with 19, finishing third in the nation and the NJCAA in goals scored. Stevely scored three game-winning goals, and his 44 points tied for the fifth-most in FLCC history.
"We were lucky to have Evan come to FLCC. His speed, strength, power and ability to win makes him a special player. He is good with his left foot, good with his right foot and physically dominant," said Mike Domm.
Sophomore Carson DeVinney (Perry, N.Y./ Perry) and freshman defender Kayden Servais (Holley, N.Y./ Holley) also earned All-Conference honors. DeVinney finished with six goals and six assists while Servais added three goals and two assists from his defensive position.
"Having Chuck, Evan, Russ, Carson and Kayden selected for first-team All-Conference, and Chuck also receiving Conference Player of the Year, is a big win for the entire team. Their hard work shows our team's commitment to personal and team growth because they all know each of their success depends on the work of the guy standing next to them. We have a brotherly bond on this team that the coaching staff is very proud of," Vince Correa said of his award-winners.
Next up for the Lakers? Postseason play, as FLCC will travel to Onondaga Community College at 5 p.m. on Oct. 27 to open the playoffs.
