CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to SUNY Niagara, which sits at 37-0 to date and is ranked #2 overall in the latest NJCAA DIII rankings.
The Lakers struggled to get going offensively in game 1, falling 13-1. Joey Sanna (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) connected on a double in the bottom of the 4th, while Trey Buchholz (Shinglehouse, P.A./Bolivar Richburg) struck an RBI single three innings later for the team's sole run of the contest. Ian Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) earned the start on the mound and distributed 5 strikeouts, while Andrew Wood (Big Flats, N.Y./Horseheads), Ty Joy (Warsaw, N.Y./Warsaw) and Alex Dungey (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) each appeared for an inning apiece, with Dungey accounting for 3 strikeouts.
The Lakers went down 5-0 to start game 2, but cut the deficit to 3 in the 5th inning when Nate Hill (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) delivered an RBI single, followed up with a score by Christian Morrison (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) on a wild pitch. However, the Thunderwolves would put the game away two innings later with 2 runs of their own in the final inning to finalize a 7-2 victory. Caleb Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) took the mound for 5 innings and dealt out 4 strikeouts, while Tino Tiermini (Irondequoit, N.Y./West Irondequoit) came in for the final 2 innings and put up a solid performance with 2 strikeouts.
The Lakers look to bounce back today, when they take the road for a doubleheader versus SUNY Jefferson set for 2 & 4 PM.
