Volleyball – Lady Lakers Conquer Opening Match of 2012 with Sweep of TC3

DRYDEN, NY. -- The first match of the 2012 season proved to be a positive one for Finger Lakes CC (1-0). Taking on Tompkins Cortland CC on the road yesterday (8/26), it was the Lady Lakers who came out victorious. In the match, they downed the Lady Panthers in three straight games (in what was a best-of-five series) – 25-23, 25-8, and 25-23. Finger Lakes took all three games behind a collective team performance on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Lakers team-wide charge was led by the cast of Brittany Havens (outside hitter), Jordan Smith (outside hitter), Danielle Joseph (outside hitter), Courtney Bradish (setter), Julianna Marcello (libero), and Conley Gayton (setter).

Havens headed the kill and block departments in the match with 8 kills and 5 blocks.

Smith finished one kill behind Havens with 7 of her own. In addition, she tallied a pair of aces, digs, and blocks apiece in the victory.

Joseph made good on 5 kills and 4 digs. Bradish completed the reversal of Joseph's stat line with 4 kills and 5 digs of her own. Along with her supply of kills and digs, Bradish also served up a duo of aces.

Marcello poured in a team-high 7 digs in Finger Lakes first match of the season.

Gayton put her imprints on 23 assists (team-high) in the road win. Additionally, she tacked on 4 aces (team-high) and 4 digs at the setter position.

All six, Havens, Smith, Joseph, Bradish, Marcello, and Gayton, played in all three games over the weekend against Tompkins.

A seventh member of the Lady Lakers squad also got in on the action. Meaghan McCarthy (middle hitter) chipped in with 3 kills, 2 assists, and 2 blocks. McCarthy, like the other six, also played in all three games.

The Lady Lakers, who captured their first ever MSAC title in 2011, will head into their next match with a vote of confidence after sweeping the Lady Panthers.
