CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Women’s Soccer team triumphed over Hudson Valley Community College in a 2-1 overtime win this past Thursday. The Lakers are now 2-0 in conference play.
This is now the second overtime win for the Lakers. They went into double overtime and won against SUNY Broome Community College. This wasn’t the Lakers’ first time in a high-pressure situation. The first half looked to be more in the Lady Viking’s favor. They got off 10 shots compared to the Laker’s 7. The Lakers took advantage of their time on the Viking’s side. Mackenzie Northrop saw her opportunity when Viking’s goalie, Kaitlin Nadeau, could not quite hold onto the ball. Northrop kept up the pressure and tapped the ball in for the Laker’s first goal. This was Northrop’s first career goal as a Laker.
Later, in the half, Viking’s Sydnee Metzold found the back of the Laker’s net tying the game. Both teams fought hard but could not find a way to finish in regulation time. The Lakers, being familiar with overtime, knew the kind of effort needed to come out triumphant. A little over two minutes into overtime, Riley Sanger scored her second overtime, game-winning goal.
Game leaders for the Lakers were Northrop with one goal, Sanger with one goal and starting goal keeper, Isabella Prest with 14 saves.
The Lakers travel to Erie Community College Wednesday, September 6, at 3:00PM.
