Women’s Soccer defeat Niagara CCC 7-0

Canandaigua, NY – The Finger Lakes Community College Women's Soccer team defeated regional opponent, Niagara County Community College by a score of 7-0.  The Lakers are now on an 8 game winning streak and have a 9-2 record on the season.

The Lakers got off to a slow start yesterday.  They possessed the ball well but didn't create any good chances until 20 minutes into the contest.  The first goal of the day was scored by Kaitlyn Huyler (25:58), who dribbled the ball through the box and around Niagara's keeper for the score.  Three minutes later, Stephanie Helzer took a through ball from Kaitlyn Huyler for the second goal. The Lakers would continue to press the Thunder Wolves defense during the first half but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. FLCC would go into the half up 2-0 to NCCC.

The Lakers took over the game in the second half of play.  Lindsey Lovett went in at forward for the Lakers and scored the first goal of the half off a feed from Kaitlyn Huyler in the 47th minute.  Lovett would score again eight minutes later from outside the box, unassisted.  The Lakers fifth goal was scored off the head of team captain, Ali Henby (60:43) off a corner kick by Jennifer Pedro.   The Lakers would be quiet for another 20 minutes until Abigail Keenan dribbled through the Niagara defense for her first goal of the afternoon with 10 minutes remaining.  The final goal of the match would be scored by Kaitlyn Huyler in the 87th minute to seal the win for the Lakers.  The final score would be 7-0 Lakers!

The Lakers are showing impressive stamina despite the number of injuries their team has faced.  Many of the girls are stepping up and filling in for each other.  Their success thus far this year shows how hard they have worked this off-season to become a force in Region III.

The Lakers will return this Saturday, 10/10 as they host visiting Tompkins Cortland Community College. Kickoff is set for 1pm.
