CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Women's Soccer team lost on Saturday to Cayuga Community College by the score of 1-0. The Lakers are now 4-4-1 on the season.
Finger Lakes controlled the possession for most of the game. Brittany Maggio had an opening down the right side in the 10th minute. Going far post, the keeper dove to tip the ball just wide and keep the game scoreless. Later in the half, a Lakers corner kick found the foot go Gabrielle Kwiatek. Her shot was blocked and went right to Alexandra Joyce. She slotted the ball just wide and the game went into the halftime break scoreless.
Cayuga would score the lone goal of the game in the 73rd minute off of a counterattack. The Spartans only had two shots on goal the entire game, compared to the Lakers' eight. Trista Hawke would nearly level the game for the Lakers twice in the dying minutes. Her cross with under two minutes to play went over the keeper's head and off the inside of the post. The goalie from Cayuga was able to coral the loose ball however. As time ticked away, Hawke got free on a run but her shot sailed just wide as the final seconds expired and the Lakers lost 1-0.
Finger Lakes now begins a long roadtrip with their next five games on the road. It starts this Wednesday as the Lakers travel to Watertown to take on Jefferson Community College in a 5pm game.
