BINGHAMTON, NY -- The Finger Lakes Community College Women's Soccer team defeated the SUNY Broome Hornets 5-3 to open the 2014 season.
The Finger Lakes offense was very efficient in Wednesday's match. The scored on their very first shot. Freshman Ali Henby sent a long ball that Brittany Maggio caught up with and finished for the early 1-0 lead in the 7th minute. Just four minutes later, Finger Lakes would get back on the board. Off of a corner kick, the ball would be lose on the box and Ali Henby would put it away for her first career goal. In the 25th minute, Henby would score again. This time she took a pass from Tessa Stone in the box. She cut back to her left and beat the keeper for a 3-0 lead. Finger Lakes would strike one more time in the half. Kailey Reddick would take the ball wide down the right side. She found Maggio open at the top of the box. She scored for the second time and Finger Lakes took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
Broome would posses the ball more in the second half, putting pressure on the Lakers defense. The Lakers would find the counter, however, as a Trista Hawke cross found Amonie DiRoma and a 5-0 lead. The Hornets would break through and score three goals in the final 10 minutes of the game, but it would not be enough as the Lakers would win 5-3.
Freshman Ali Henby would record five points, two goals and one assist, in her first collegiate game. Maggio netted a pair of goals as well. Broome outshot the Lakers in the contest. They had 11 shots on goal to Finger Lakes' six.
Finger Lakes will return to action following the Labor Day weekend. The Lakers will travel to Troy, NY to take on the Vikings of Hudson Valley. Kickoff is set for 3pm.
