Mohawk Valley Edges Finger Lakes, 2-1

CANANDAIUGA -- In a remacth of last years Region III Championship Game, Finger Lakes fell to Mohawk Valley Community College at home on Wednesday. This meeting had the same final scoreline as the championship game a year ago, 2-1. With the loss, the Lakers' record falls to 6-3.

Mohawk Valley wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Their first shot on goal, taken in the 2nd minute, found the back of the net. Meagan Carlo had the ball on the left side of the box. She would center it to leading scorer Silvana Giovannone who would score for the 11th time this season. The margin could have been wider a minute later, but freshman goalie Daniele Ogrodowski would cut off the angle and force Giovannone to put it off the post and wide. Ogrodowski would stop seven Mohawk Valley shots in the half. The Lakers would get on the board in the 31st minute. In the midfield, Brittani Bove would find Brittany Maggio on the right side. She would out run the Hawk defenders and drive the ball to the left corner and into the side netting to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Maggio's 13th of the season, which ranks among the nations leaders.

Daniele Ogrodowski would keep the score tied at 1-1 with some key saves early. in the 50th minute, Brooke Pominville would take the ball on the right side of the box and fire to the top left corner. Ogrodowski would dive to stop the ball and control the rebound. Just a minute later, Giovannone would attempt to get her second goal of the game, but Ogrodowski would leap, tip the ball off the crossbar, and then catch the carom for the save. The Lakers would get some tough luck in the 75th minute. Valois Feneziani would beat the Hawks keeper on the left side, but the ball hit the post. It bounced back off the goalie and rolled towards the goalline until the keeper recovered the rebound for the save. Off the punt, Giovannone took the ball streaking down the right side towards the Laker net. She would fire farside at the goal. The ball would hit the post but bounce right to the foot of Jordan Case who scored the game winning goal to make it 2-1. The Hawks controlled the possession most of the game and fired off 37 shots, with 18 of them finding the goal, compared to the Lakers 15, 9 on goal. Daniele Ogrodowski recorded 16 saves in the losing effort.

Finger Lakes will travel to Onondaga Community College on Saturday to take on the Lazers in a Region III West and Mid-State Athletic Conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm.
