Finger Lakes Repeats Conclave Championship

COBLESKILL, NY -- The 68th Northeast Collegiate Woodsmen Conclave was held on April 24th and 25th, hosted by SUNY Cobleskill. The Conclave included 36 6-person teams from numerous colleges and universities, including Penn State University, Alfred State College, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Dartmouth College, University of Maine, Paul Smith’s College, University of Connecticut; FLCC was the only community college contender. Each team competed in 16 different logging sports events (sawing, chopping, log rolling to name a few) for the prized title of North East Champions of their respective Men’s, Women’s or Jack and Jill division.

FLCC Men’s team won their 20th championship title, more titles than any other Northeast contender, earning bragging rights for a second year in a row! The men’s team comprised Matt Baird (Boonville, NY) winning the fly-casting event, Trevor Bliss (Walworth, NY) winning the pole climb event, Jon Davis (Livingston Manor, NY) winning the doubles cross cut event, Austin Montgomery (Ontario, NY), Derrick Tuttle (South Dayton, NY) winning the single bucking event, and Ben “Hogweed” Williams (Clyde, NY).

“This win is super sweet” said Coach Ryan Staychock. “We had to keep focused on day 2 of the competition, and our men did just that” added Staychock. The FLCC Men won over second place Alfred State by a wide margin of 114 points (7%) and over third place SUNY ESF by 163 points (10%). On day two alone, FLCC Men earned 881 points out of a potential 1000.

For a second straight year the FLCC Women’s team won a strong second place, just 26 points (1.5%) behind Colby College, who won their second straight Championship. FLCC women won several events including the team canoe relay, team cross cut, team bow saw, and the pole climb. The FLCC Women’s Team included Taylor Briggs (Afton, NY), Sierra Eiffert (Cohocton, NY), Alexis Hallstead (Owego, NY), Kelsey Hamilton (Palmyra, NY), Kelby Harvey (Canaseraga, NY), and Courtney Switzer (Bellona, NY). FLCC Jack and Jill team won third place behind Alfred State and Paul Smith’s College respectively. The Jack and Jill Team included Sean Anderson (Seneca Falls. NY), Brandon Graves (Canandaigua, NY), Jared Morehouse(Honeoye Falls, NY), Mary Benincasca (Canandaigua, NY), Cecilia Frey (Pittsford, NY), Erin Koehler (Ontario, NY), and Emily Stritzel (Williamson, NY). They won the team canoe relay, team pulp toss, and fly casting.

FLCC is the winningest collegiate woodsmen program in the northeast division, boasting 20 Men’s championships and 14 Women’s championships in the 68 year history of the sport. “We will continue to push our student athletes to be good people, do well in school, and chop, saw, and canoe faster than anybody else” said Staychock. FLCC is already looking forward to their October 4th 2014 home opener, hosted on the FLCC main campus in Canandaigua, NY.
