Lakers Slip at Genesee

BATAVIA, NY -- The Finger Lakes Women's Basketball team lost to Genesee Community College on Tuesday by the score of 73-64. The Lakers are now 4-18 on the season.

Finger Lakes got out to a hot start against the Cougars. They made three of their first four three pointers and built a 22-10 lead over the first ten minutes of play. Genesee would go on a 14-2 run to tie the game at 24-24, but the Lakers answered quickly. Rachel Graves and Taylor Harris Made back to back jumpers. That was followed by a pair of three pointers by Carlye Capron and Monica Brennan. The Lakers were 4-4 from the field over that two minute stretch as they went on a 10-0 run to build their lead back up. Finger Lakes would be leading by six at halftime, 37-31.

Alex Shepard led Finger Lakes in scoring in the first half with 11 points. As a team, Finger Lakes shot 50% from three point territory, going 6-12.

The Lakers offense would continue to click in the second half. Over the first three minutes, the Lakers built their lead back to double-digits. A Carlye Capron three gave Finger Lakes a 46-35 advantage. Genesee would fight back, however. They rallied to tie the game at 54-54 with nine minutes left to play in the game. After the Cougars took a small lead, a Monica Brennan jumper tied the game 61-61 with four minutes left to play. Finger Lakes would run out of offense though as they went 1-6 from the field and 1-4 from the line as Genesee closed the game on a 12-3 run for the 73-64 victory.

Shepard finished a rebound and two assists shy of a triple-double. She finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. Michelle Broderick and Monica Brennan were also in double-digits. Broderick scored 14 points while Brennan finished with 11. Daniele Ogrodowski had a game-high 12 rebounds. 

Last time out, Finger Lakes had their streak of 72 consecutive games with a three pointer snapped by Jefferson. They answered in a strong way against Genesee making 10 threes as a team. It was the most three pointers made in a game since February 2013.

Finger Lakes will return home on Saturday as they face Corning Community College in a Mid-State Athletic Conference matchup. Tipoff with the Red Barons is set for 1pm.
