Lakers Lose at Cayuga 70-55

AUBURN, NY -- The Finger Lakes Women's Basketball team fell to Cayuga Community College on Saturday by the score of 70-55. The Mid-State Athletic Conference loss drops the Lakers conference record to 1-4 and they are 4-13 overall.

The Lakers got out fast in Auburn against the Spartans. Finger Lakes made their first four shots, all off of quality assists. The early run for the Lakers was capped by a pair of three pointers by Michelle Broderick and Finger Lakes led 10-4, three minutes into the game. The Spartans did not go away. They kept the game within range the rest of the half. The game was narrowed to two points, 30-28, before Daniele Ogrodowski found Taylor Harris in the paint for an off-balanced layup and a four point lead. Cayuga took the lead from the Lakers in the last two minutes of the half and had a 37-36 lead at halftime.

Broderick led the Lakers in the first half. She made her first three three point attempts, and first four shots overall for 11 points. Alex Shepard had six points in the half. Monica Brennan also had six points off of a pair of three pointers. Daniele Ogrodowski grabbed six rebounds in the half for the Lakers.

The Spartans started the second on a 6-0 run to grow their lead. The Lakers hung around as an Alex Shepard three point play made it a 43-42 game with 15 minutes remaining. That would be as close as the Lakers would make it however. Cayuga did not relinquish the lead the entire half. Michelle Broderick's fourth three of the game made it a five point game, 50-45, halfway through the second, but Cayuga had an answer for every Laker basket. The Spartans continued on to the 70-55 victory.

Broderick led the Lakers with 16 points, setting a new career-high. Alex Shepard finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Taylor Harris was also in double-figures. She finished with 10 points off of the bench and Daniele Ogrodowski added a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lakers return home on Wednesday as they host nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College. The Mid-State Athletic Conference matchup is set to start at 5:30pm.
