Lakers Fall in Overtime 76-73

CANANDAIGUA -- Alex Shepard's career-high 36 points was not enough as Finger Lakes fell to Division II Genesee Community College 76-73 on Thursday. The Lakers are now 1-7 on the season.

Genesee got out to a fast start against the Lakers and built an early lead. A three pointer would stretch the lead to 24-15 halfway through the first, but the Lakers would begin to fight back. Taylor Harris would contribute 3 key baskets for the Lakers as they went on a 12-2 run to close the half and carry a 27-26 lead into the break.

Both teams would improve on their shooting in the second half as the game began to open up. Alex Shepard converted a three point play early on in the half to give Finger Lakes a five point lead, 36-31. It was their largest lead in the game. The lead would bounce back and forth as the half progressed. Overall in the game, there were 17 lead changes and the game was tied 15 times. Finger Lakes held Genesee to just five points over the final four minutes of regulation, however the Lakers only scored three themselves. Finger Lakes had a chance with a last second shot, however the buzzer sounded before its release and the game went to overtime tied 60-60. 

The Lakers would hold a five point lead in overtime before the Cougars fought back. Ryenn Smith made a pair of free throws to tie the game with 53 seconds remaining. Genesee took the lead back, but Shepard answered with a jumper to make it 73-73. Genesee would make three free throws over the final eight seconds of play, however as they went on to win the game 76-73.

Alex Shepard finished with a career-high 36 points. Her total ties her for the second most in school history. Brittany Williams (2009) and Jen Repard (1989) hold the school record with 40 points in a game. Shepard also added a career-high 14 rebounds for the Lakers. Taylor Harris joined her with 14 boards and added 12 points. Ryenn Smith finished with 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds for Finger Lakes.

The Lakers are home this weekend for a Region III doubleheader. They take on Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday and then face SUNY Adirondack on Sunday on Putt Moore Court. Tipoff for both games are set for 1pm.
