Women's Basketball Falls in Season Opener

CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Women's Basketball team lost their season opening game to Monroe Community College on Tuesday by the score of 97-44. 

The Lakers got the first basket of the game, a layup by Amber Matthews, and hung with the nationally ranked Tribunes. Monroe would go on a 27-3 run over a seven minute stretch in the first to take a hold of the game. Monroe carried a 54-20 lead at halftime.

The second half remained the same, with Monroe holding control of the contest. The Tribunes took advantage of Laker turnovers on their way to a 97-44 victory.

Alex Shepard led Finger Lakes in scored in with 19 points, tying her career-high. She also led the Lakers in rebounding with five. Amber Matthews set a new career-high with nine points in her first career start. 

The Lakers will open Region III play this Sunday as they travel to SUNY-Delhi to face the Broncos. Tipoff is scheduled for 3pm.
