CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Community College Women's Basketball team beat Cayuga Community College on Saturday by the score of 69-63. Finger Lakes now stands 6-8 on the season and 3-1 in Mid-State Athletic Conference contests.
The first half started out slow, but Alex Shepard would take the lead, with a basket to start Finger Lakes off. Ryenn Smith and Casey Dean would also contribute a pair of points each to put the Lakers at a 6-0 lead early in the half. Cayuga would fight back to tie the Lakers, throughout the first period. Smith would make a lay-up with 12 minutes left to pull the Lakers ahead 16-14. Lakers would hold the lead for the rest of the half. With 2 minutes remaining in the half, Taylor Guerin would score to push the Lakers to a 10 point lead, 31-21. The Lakers would finish the half with a five point lead over the Spartans, with a score of 33-28.
Ryenn Smith reached her career-high, scoring 12 points it the half. Daniele Ogrodowski led the team with three offensive rebounds, while Alex Shepard led the Lakers with six defensive rebounds. Kelly Broderick finished the half with a game-leading three assists.
The Spartans would fight to stay in the game the second half, catching up to the Lakers. With less than 14 minutes left in the half, Casey Dean would make a basket to hold the Lakers lead 39-33. Alex Shepard made a lay-up with 12 minutes left in the half to put the Lakers at a ten point lead of 43-33. Daniele Ogrodowski made a lay-up with nine minutes left in the half to put the Lakers at an eight point lead with a score of 47-39. Cayuga would get back in the game, but still trail the Lakers by four points, 47-43. Kelly Broderick would pass to Ashley Armstrong for a lay-up that put the a hold on the Lakers lead 51-46 with five minutes remaining in the second half. Cayuga would stick around, though, getting it back to a three point game. With just 18 seconds remaining in the second half, Cayuga would tie the Lakers 57-57 on a three pointer and push the game into overtime.
Overtime would be all Finger Lakes though. Ashley Armstrong would open the scoring up with a pair of free throws and then Alexis Maiorano would take over. She would scoring the next five points, with a layup and a three pointer, to give the Lakers a 64-57 lead. Finger Lakes would maintain the lead the rest of the overtime period as they beat the Cayuga 69-63 in overtime.
Ryenn Smith finished with 16 points, a new career-high, shooting 6-9 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. Casey Dean and Ashley Armstrong each contributed 11 points, followed by Kelly Broderick and Alexis Maiorana who added 9 points each. Armstrong also added 10 rebounds and Broderick had 6 assists.
Finger Lakes will hit the road next week, traveling to nationally ranked Onondaga Community College on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 4pm on January 22nd.
