Lakers Fall to Hawks

CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Women's Basketball team fell to Mohawk Valley Community College on Saturday by the score of 68-51. The Lakers' record now stands at 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in Region III play. 

Kelly Broderick started the Lakers off with a 2 point lead, 22 seconds into the first half. The Hawks caught up soon after, leading by three over the Lakers early. Broderick found her bank shot to tie the game at five early in the first half. The teams would exchange baskets throughout most of the first half. The Lakers would build a lead up to five points halfway through, but the Hawks would fight back. Finger Lakes would widen the margin towards the end of the half. Casey Dean and Ryenn Smith would both make free throws and Alexis Maiorano would make a basket off of a Dean steal to give the Lakers a 26-21 lead at the half. 

Kelly Broderick led the break with 12 points. Daniele Ogrodowski, Jade Harris, Broderick, and Dean all contributed on the glass with three rebounds a piece.

Mohawk Valley started to build momentum at the start of the second half, scoring five point in the first two minutes to tie the score at 26-26. The Lakers would take the lead on a Alex Shepard jumper with 14 minutes to play. That would be the last lead the Lakers would have. Mohawk would tie it up at 37, and then go on a 9-2 run to widen the margin. Finger Lakes would fight to get it back to a four point game with six minutes remaining.The Hawks offense, however, would not let up as Mohawk Valley continued to a 68-51 victory. 

Kelly Broderick led the Lakers with 17 points. The sophomore from Canandaigua was 3-6 from three point territory. Joining her in double-digits was Alex Shepard with 10 points. Casey Dean had a game-high of nine rebounds for the Lakers. 

The Lakers remain home, taking on Herkimer County Community College on Sunday November 24th. Tip off from Putt Moore Court is scheduled for 12pm.
