BINGHAMTON — The Finger Lakes Community College softball team posted its first sweep of the 2017 season Saturday, sweeping SUNY Broome Community College by scores of 15-5 and 9-1.
The Lakers (4-18, 3-7) earned both wins via the mercy rule.
In the opener, FLCC struck early and often, pushing across six runs in the opening frame, and tacking on six more runs in the third. Sophomore Michaela Anderson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) drove in five runs in Game 1 for the Lakers.
Freshman Jenna Theilen (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) got the scoring started on an RBI double, sophomore Peyton Wyjad (Macedon, N.Y./Gananda) delivered an RBI triple, and Anderson followed with an RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
Following a walk and a run-scoring sacrifice fly out, freshman Michelle Richardson (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) and sophomore Jenna Pedro (Oakfield, N.Y./Elba) came through with RBI singles as the Lakers took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
Pedro had an RBI single, Theilen plated two on a double, Anderson added a two-run single, and sophomore Madison Joseph (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) added an RBI single during the six-run third.
Anderson later added a two-run single during a three-run fourth to finish off the scoring for the Lakers.
In Game 2, FLCC pounced for two runs in the first, added three in the fifth, and pushed across four runs in the sixth to complete the sweep.
Wyjad had an RBI double and Richardson added a two-out, RBI single in the fifth. In the sixth, Theilen came through with an RBI double, and sophomore Anna Dickens (Ovid, N.Y./South Seneca) followed with a two-run single to spark the Lakers to the sweep.
The Lakers return to action Sunday, travelling to Jefferson CC for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
