CANANDAIGUA — The Finger Lakes Community College softball team split a pair of doubleheaders against Tompkins-Cortland Community College and Monroe Community College to earn the team's first wins of the season.
Playing at home, FLCC split with Tompkins Cortland Tuesday, winning Game 1 by a 23-2 score in five innings before suffering a heart-breaking, 8-7 loss in eight innings in the nightcap. 2
Taking on MCC Thursday, the Lakers dropped the opener, 6-1, before salvaging the split with a 4-3 win in Game 2.
Here are the highlights from both doubleheaders for FLCC (2-18, 1-7):
Against Tompkins Cortland Community College, the Lakers won the opener via the mercy rule, scoring five runs in the first inning, eight in the second, six in the third, and four in the fourth.
Sophomore Jenna Pedro (Oakfield, N.Y./Elba) was 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, classmate Madison Joseph (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) was 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, and freshman Jenna Theilen (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Pedro drove in two runs on a two-out, first inning single as the Lakers took an early 5-0 lead, and sophomore Anna Dickens (Ovid, N.Y./South Seneca) added a two-run single to highlight the eight-run second inning.
Freshman Jenna Theilen (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) drilled a two-run double and Joseph added a two-run single during the third, and the Lakers secured their first win of the season with a four-run fourth.
Freshman Jessica Williams (Belfast, N.Y./Belfast) allowed two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts to earn her first career collegiate win.
In the opener, FLCC struck early and often, pushing across six runs in the opening frame, and tacking on six more runs in the third. Sophomore Michaela Anderson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) drove in five runs in Game 1 for the Lakers.
Freshman Jenna Theilen (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) got the scoring started on an RBI double, sophomore Peyton Wyjad (Macedon, N.Y./Gananda) delivered an RBI triple, and Anderson followed with an RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
In Game 2, FLCC led 7-6 after a two-out RBI single from freshman Michelle Richardson (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale), but TC3 tied the score in the bottom of the seventh, held the Lakers scoreless in the eighth, and pushed across the winning run to earn the split.
Williams was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, Richardson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Anderson was 2-for-5 with a run scored for FLCC.
Facing the Tribunes, sophomore Jenna Pedro (Oakfield, N.Y./Elba) hit a two-out, RBI single in the sixth, but MCC won the opener scoring three runs in the first, and tacking on a run in the third and fifth inning.
The Lakers pushed across three runs in the bottom of the third to seize control in Game 2. FLCC's first run came on an error, and with two outs, Wyjad delivered a two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
MCC got back one run in the fourth, but FLCC re-took a three-run lead on an RBI single from Anderson, and Williams worked out of a jam in the seventh to earn her second win. She allowed three runs on seven hits for the complete-game win.
The Lakers return to action Saturday, hosting Broome CC for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
