ROCHESTER, NY -- The Finger Lakes Community College Softball team fell in the Region III Quarterfinals to Monroe Community College on Tuesday by the score of 6-2.
Rachel Mertens led the game off with a single for Finger Lakes. That was followed by a single by Courtney Edger. Both runners would score in the inning on passed balls and the Lakers took and early 2-0 lead. The Tribunes answered with a run in the first to make it 2-1 Lakers. Starting pitcher Rachel Mertens held Monroe offense at bay until the fifth inning when Monroe scored an unearned run to tie the game at 2-2. The Tribunes would take the lead in the sixth with four runs, all scored with two outs, to take a 6-2 lead. Monroe closed it out in the seventh for the 6-2 victory ending the Lakers season.
Rachel Mertens, Courtney Edger, Jennifer Marshall, and Courtney Bradish each registered singles for the Lakers. Mertens threw the complete game for Finger Lakes and had four strikeouts.
Finger Lakes finished the season with a 15-12 record. The 15 wins are the most in a softball season in school history. It was also the first time in school history that the softball team qualified for the Region III Tournament.
