CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Community College Softball team swept a doubleheader against Mohawk Valley Community College on Thursday by the scores of 18-11 and 5-4. The Lakers are now 12-10 on the season and 11-6 in Region III play.
Game 1 featured plenty of offense. The Lakers found themselves trailing early to the Hawks. They trailed 3-0, 7-3, and 9-4 before the Lakers had a six-run bottom of the third inning to take a 10-9 lead. Mohawk Valley took the lead back in the fourth inning, but the Lakers answered with three in the bottom of the frame to make it 13-11. Finger Lakes added five late runs on their way to the 18-11 victory.
Kelly Kier continued her hot hitting for the Lakers. She collected four hits in the game. Rachel Mertens finished 3-3 and a home run short of the cycle. Courtney Bradish scored four runs and drove in four. Elaina Evinsky drove in three runs and scored three runs herself for Finger Lakes. Evinisky also got the win in the circle for the Lakers.
The Lakers once again found themselves trailing after the top of the first inning. Mohawk Valley plated three runs, but the Lakers were able to answer with one of their own. Finger Lakes scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at 3-3. The Hawks took the lead back in the top of the sixth with a run, but the Lakers answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to give them the 5-4 lead for good.
Elaina Evinsky got her second win of the day, throwing a complete game in Game 2. Katie Plummer had a pair of hits, including a double. Plummer also drove in a pair of runs. Kelly Kier and Rachel Mertens also had a hit for Finger Lakes.
The Lakers will travel to Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Saturday to take on the Raiders. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
