CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Community College Softball team fell in a doubleheader to Corning Community College on Tuesday by the scores of 6-0 and 10-5. The Lakers are now 10-10 on the season and 9-6 in regional play.
The Red Barons jumped out on the Lakers early in Game 1. They plated a pair of runs in the top of the first. The Lakers would threaten in the bottom of the second inning. Jennifer Marshall led off the inning with a single. Katie Plummer walked and Kelly Kier singled to left to load the bases with no outs. Corning would strand all three runners though as they struck out the next three batters to end the inning. The Red Barons took the momentum and scored a third run in the fourth, making it 3-0. Corning would widen the margin in the later innings and go on to win the game 6-0.
Marshall and Plummer each had a hit for Finger Lakes. Rachel Mertens was on base three times for the Lakers with three walks.
Corning would jump out to an early lead once again in Game 2. The Red Barons scored seven runs in top of the first inning for the quick lead. Finger Lakes would chip away at the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Kelly Kier led the inning off with a double to the left field wall. Jessica Bernard followed that with a triple down the left field line scoring Kier. Bernhard scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 7-2. Corning threatened in the third, but Jennifer Marshall snared a line drive at third base and doubled the runner on second off for the inning-ending double play. Corning added a couple of insurance runs in the later innings and led 10-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Courtney Bradish singled down the right field line. Daniele Ogrodowski walked and Rachel Mertens doubled to the left centerfield gap. The double scored Bradish. Orgrodowski came home on a wild pitch and Mertens scored on an error, but Corning held on for the 10-5 win.
Kelly Kier had a pair of hits for the Lakers. Rachel Mertens had a RBI double and Jessica Bernhard had a RBI triple for the Lakers.
Finger Lakes will remain at home this Thursday. The Lakers will host the Hawks of Mohawk Valley Community College. The Region III doubleheader is set for 3pm.
