CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Community College Softball stayed hot and won their fifth straight game by sweeping a doubleheader against Erie Community College. The Lakers took the first game 3-1 and won the nightcap 5-1. Finger Lakes is now 8-6 on the season and 7-2 in Region III play.
The Lakers got on the board first in Game 1, plating a run in the bottom of the first. Erie would answer with tally of their own in the second inning, but Finger Lakes would score the deciding runs in the fifth on their way to the 3-1 victory.
Rachel Mertens controlled the game in the circle. She struck out a career-high 14 batters in recording her sixth win of the season. Mertens was also 2-3 at the plate with a pair of stolen bases. Elaina Evinsky also had a pair of hits for the Lakers.
Erie would strike first, scoring the opening run of the game in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Kelly Kier would settle into the game after that and shutout the Kats for the remaining innings. The fifth inning proved to be the Lakers inning once again as they plated five runs to take the lead. Finger Lakes would go on to win the contest 5-1.
Kier only allowed three hits and struck out six batters for Finger Lakes. It was the sophomores first win in the circle this season. Courtney Edger had a pair of hits, including a triple, and a pair of RBIs. Katie Plummer also had a pair of runs batted in and Jennifer Marshall recorded her third double of the season.
The Lakers will take to the road on Sunday. After their game with Clinton got canceled, Finger Lakes will travel to Herkimer, NY to take on the #2 ranked Generals. Finger Lakes fell to Herkimer 6-3 in a tight game earlier this year in Myrtle Beach, SC. First pitch of the doubleheader on Sunday is set for 1pm.
