CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Community College Softball team swept Cayuga Community College on Thursday by the scores of 9-0 and 4-1. The Lakers leveled their overall record at 6-6 on the season. Finger Lakes is also 2-0 in conference play and 5-2 in Region III play.
Finger Lakes would waste no time getting on the scoreboard in Game 1. They plated a pair of runs in the opening inning and would not look back. They would back that up with four runs in the second and three runs in the third for the early 9-0 lead. Rachel Mertens would hold the Spartans in check and the Lakers would win the opener 9-0 in five innings.
Jessica Bernhard went 3-3 for the Lakers with a double and three RBIs. Kelly Kier was 2-2 and Courtney Edger drove in a pair of runs. Jennifer Marshall also had an RBI double for Finger Lakes. Rachel Mertens threw the complete game shutout allowing only four hits and striking out seven.
The Lakers take the lead early in Game 2 as well. They plated a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings for the 4-0 lead. Cayuga would answer with a run in the fifth to make it 4-1, but Elaina Evinsky would not allow another run on the way to a 4-1 Lakers victory.
Katie Plummer and Jennifer Marshall each had three hits for the Lakers. Plummer also drove in a pair of runs. Courtney Edger and Courtney Bradish each added a pair of hits for Finger Lakes. Elaina Evinsky got her first win of the season, striking out nine batters.
The Lakers will remain at home this Saturday as they host the Kats of Erie Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1pm.
