BATAVIA, NY -- The Finger Lakes Community College Softball team split a regional doubleheader with Genesee Community College on Wednesday. The Lakers fell in eight innings in Game 1 by the score of 2-1. Finger Lakes bounced back in Game 2 for the 4-3 win in eight innings as well. The Lakers are now 4-6 on the season.
The opening game would be a pitchers duel between Finger Lakes starter Rachel Mertens and Ashley Covel for Genesee. In a scoreless game in the sixth inning, Jessica Bernhard would single home Rachel Mertens for the 1-0 lead. Genesee fought back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The would then plate the winning run with one out in the eighth inning for the 2-1 walkoff win.
Rachel Mertens threw the complete game and struck out 12 Cougar batters. Bernhard finished the game with a pair of hits for the Lakers. Mertens, Bernhard, Ogrodowski, and Bradish all stole bases for Finger Lakes as well.
Finger Lakes would strike first in Game 2, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. They would grow their lead to 2-0 before Genesee got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Finger Lakes would answer in the sixth with a run to make it 3-1. The Cougars would not go away though as they scored in the bottom of the sixth. Once again, Genesee would push across a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3 and force extra innings. The Lakers would answer right back in the eighth with a run and held off Genesee in the bottom of the inning to preserve the 4-3 vicotry.
The Lakers will have their home opener on Thursday as they host Cayuga Community College. First pitch against the Spartans is set for 3pm.
