MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- The Finger Lakes Softball team lost a pair of games Wednesday on their spring break trip in Myrtle Beach. They lost to Division II Southwestern Community College 16-1. They then took on the top Division III team in the nation, Herkimer County Community College. The Lakers fell to the Generals 6-3. The Lakers are now 1-3 on the season.
The Lakers fell behind early in the first game against Southwestern. Elaina Evinsky was a bright spot for the Lakers. She went 2-2 on the day with an RBI and a stolen base. Rachel Mertens, Courtney Edger, Katie Plummer, and Maggie Ward all added a hit for Finger Lakes in the 16-1 loss.
In Game 2 against Herkimer, the Generals led early 3-0. Finger Lakes would get right back into the game with a pair of runs in the second inning. Herkimer would add three insurance runs and lead 6-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Lakers were able to push one run across in the inning, but it was not enough as they would lose to Herkimer 6-3.
Courtney Edger and Kelly Kier each had a pair of hits for the Lakers. Daniele Ogrodowski doubled in a run for Finger Lakes. The hit was her first career collegiate hit. Maggie Ward and Rachel Mertens also added a hit for Finger Lakes. Mertens went the distance in the circle. She struck out three in the complete game loss.
Finger Lakes will wrap up their spring trip on Thursday as they take on the College of Southern Maryland. The doubleheader against the Hawks is scheduled to start at 9:30am.
