TROY, N.Y. -- The Finger Lakes Community College softball team split a doubleheader with Hudson Valley Community College yesterday. The Lakers dropped the first game in the bottom half of the seventh inning, 2-1, but topped the Vikings 7-3 in the second game.
The Lakers will return home today to host Monroe Community College. The first pitch is scheduled for 5p.m. at Laker Softball Field.
Game 1 -- Hudson Valley Community College 2, Finger Lakes Community College 1
Hudson Valley took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning. The Lakers tied the game in the top half of the sixth inning on a Samantha German line drive that was misplayed by the Hudson Valley Community College right fielder.
In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Hudson Valley Community College's Sierra Bailey singled to start off the inning. Two batters later, Lauren Aitken singled home pinch runner Diaquaisa Forehand to give the Vikings the walk-off victory.
Rachel Mertens pitched 6.1 innings, and struck out three batters. The Syracuse, N.Y. native gave up just two earned runs on six hits.
Game 2 -- Finger Lakes Community College 7, Hudson Valley Community College 3
The bats returned to life for Finger Lakes Community College in the second game, as the Lakers posted 11 hits. Mertens, German, Kelly Kier, and Tamara Robertson each posted multi-hit games. The Lakers also received two runs batted in from Taylor Briggs, and one run batted in from both Evinsky and Maggie Ward.
Evinsky went the distance to earn the victory. The Spencerport, N.Y. native gave up three runs on seven hits. Evinsky also fanned three batters.
