Track and Field – Finger Lakes Competes In Region III Championships

DELHI, NY. – The Finger Lakes Community College (CC) men's and women's track and field team competed in the 2012 NJCAA Region III Championships this past weekend. The meet, which took place on Friday (4/27) and Saturday (4/28), consisted of five participating colleges. Along with Finger Lakes, the other four colleges that competed in this two-day competition included the likes of SUNY Delhi, Alfred State College, Herkimer County CC, and Mohawk Valley CC.

Both the Finger Lakes men and women's divisions each posted fifth place finishes overall. In their divisions, the men registered a total of 52 points while the women accumulated a total of 38 points. A complete listing of where each team finished with their total points earned can be viewed below.

Team Rankings

Men: (1) SUNY Delhi – 237 points (pts), (2) Alfred State – 195 pts, (3) Herkimer County – 108 pts, (4) Mohawk Valley – 62 pts, (5) Finger Lakes – 52 pts

Women: (1) Mohawk Valley – 172 pts, (2) Herkimer County – 158 pts, (3) SUNY Delhi – 157 pts, (4) Alfred State – 129 pts, (5) Finger Lakes - 38 pts

Finger Lakes Individual Performances

Men: Samuel Beckwith (Ovid, NY) posted the lone first place finish out of either division for the team over the weekend with his 6.46 meter (m) leap in the Long Jump. Teammate Jeremy Westerfield (Penn Yan, NY) joined Beckwith in the top ten in this event by notching a seventh place finish. His jump was good for 5.66 m. Westerfield's top performance of the weekend came in the Javelin Throw, where he conquered fourth place for his efforts with a throw of 42.14 m.

David Herbert (Springwater, NY) placed the second best individual performance of the weekend out of both divisions for the team by taking second in the 10000 Meter Run. He finished the event with a time of 37:42.90. Herbert also contributed a top five showing in the 5000 Meter Run, where he finished fourth with a time of 19:18.80.

Anthony Shuler (Liverpool, NY) registered the most consistent weekend individually for the men. He tallied a pair of third place finishes as well as a fifth place showing in several different events. Shuler's third place finishes came in the 400 Meter Run (52.04) and Triple Jump (12.56 m). His fifth place showing came in the 200 Meter Dash, where he placed a time of 23.59.

Jason Woodard (Manchester, NY) placed fourth in the Steeplechase with a time of 11:32.

Nicholas Jasikoff (Ovid, NY) placed sixth and eighth respectively in the Hammer Throw (36.23 m) and Discus Throw (31.94 m).

Joey Christian IV (Webster, NY) added a sixth place showing in the Shot Put. His throw was good for 12.58 m.

Women: Leigha Tilton (Livonia, NY), Julie Brooks (Holley, NY), and Jessica Kaiser (Ovid, NY) highlighted the weekend from an individual standpoint in their divisions for the team. Tilton placed second in the 100 Meter Hurdles (17.34) and third in both the 100 Meter Dash (13.46) and High Jump (1.52 m).

Brooks placed fourth in both the Long Jump (4.43 m) and Triple Jump (9.34 m) as well as fifth in the High Jump (1.47 m).

Kaiser placed a pair of sixth place showings in the 100 Meter Dash (14.95) and Long Jump (4.22 m).

Team Performances

Men: The 4X100 Meter Relay team of Damien Brown (Liverpool, NY), Beckwith, Westerfield, and Shuler combined for a third place showing with an overall time of 45.74.

Women: Did not place in any of the team events.

Upcoming Meet: Finger Lakes will wrap up its season this upcoming week when it heads to Alfred State College to compete in the 2012 NJCAA National Championship. The meet will consist of a three-day competition, beginning on Thursday (5/3) and concluding on Saturday (5/5). Thursday's festivities will get underway at 9:00 am. On Friday, the meet will continue with a 9:00 am start time. The final day of this year's National Championship will kick off at 10:00 am on Saturday.
