CANANDAIGUA -- Quintin Ashley scored in the 109th minute to lift Finger Lakes to a 1-0 victory over Jefferson Community College on Saturday in the NJCAA Region III Tournament. With the win, Finger Lakes advances to face the #1 seed Herkimer County Community College on Tuesday.
The game was a balanced one throughout. Both teams were able to get attempts on net, but the keepers were up to the task. Finger Lakes had an opportunity midway through the first half when Ange Soumbassis found Paul Palmgreen on a long ball behind Jefferson's back line. The Cannoneers were able to recover, however, and the game would be tied at the half.
The second half found Finger Lakes increasing the pressure against Jefferson. Overall in the half, the Lakers had an 11-3 advantage in shots and 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Jacob LeClair made three saves in the half for Jefferson and the game would be scoreless after 90 minutes of play.
The Cannoneers attacked the Lakers in the first overtime period. They had the only two shots and corner kicks of the period, but Brian Arcara made a pair of saves. The Lakers came out in the second overtime with a more attacking sense.
When the game seemed destined for penalty kicks, Divante Geiger took a pass into the right side of the box. LaClair pressured his first attempt with a slide and kicked the ball away. Geiger recollected the ball and centered it to Quintin Ashley. The freshman's initial shot in the middle of the box was blocked by a trio of Cannoneer defenders. The ball would bounce back to Ashley. He dribbled to the left and set a left footed kick back across the net, towards the right post and in for the 1-0 double overtime victory.
The win was Finger Lakes' first postseason victory since the 2009 season. The Lakers will now travel to Herkimer to take on the Generals. Herkimer is the #1 seed in the Regional III Tournament and the #1 seed in the NJCAA National Polls. Kickoff will be under the lights in Herkimer at 7pm.
