Men's Lacrosse Tops Cannoneers in Home Opener

Canandaigua, NY -- The Finger Lakes Community College men's lacrosse team played their 2017 home opener against Jefferson Community College in a Mid-State Athletic Conference match-up on Wednesday, April 12.  The Lakers defeated the Cannoneers 18-8, improving their record to 4-3 on the season.  

The Lakers jumped ahead early in Wednesday's conference game against the Cannoneers.  Alex Chiara started the scoring for the Lakers two minutes into the first quarter.  Austin Andryshak put the Lakers up 2-0 just minutes later. He was assisted by Ethan Bakogiannis.  The Cannoneers would answer back with two goals of their own to tie the game 2-2 with two minutes remaining in the first quarter.  Zakk Mount would score for the Lakers with just nine seconds remaining to put the Lakers ahead 3-2 going into the second quarter.  

The Cannoneers would score first in the second quarter, but Chiara would score off a Bakogiannis assist to put the Lakers back ahead 4-3.  Jefferson scored two unanswered to take the lead from the Lakers 5-4 with 10 minutes remaining in the quarter.  The Lakers would answer back, scoring five consecutive goals before the half regaining the lead 9-5.  Tate Stewart would claim three goals.  He was assisted once by Austin Andryshak.  Andryshak picked up his second goal of the game, while Chiara completed his hat-trick. They were assisted by Mount and Andryshak.   

The Lakers continued their scoring run by scoring the first two goals of the third quarter. Bakogiannis scored his first goal of the game, while Mount picked up his second. Andryshak assisted Mount, picking up his fourth assist.  The Cannoneers added two more goals in the third quarter, but the Lakers picked up four more of their own. Stewart scored twice for the Lakers, putting his total at five through three quarters. He was assisted by Chiara and Michael Alexander.  Chiara Also picked up his fourth and final goal of the day. Josh Zugnoni also scored for the Lakers.

In the final quarter of Wednesday's contest, the Lakers would outscore the Cannoneers 3-1. Stewart scored his final two goals of the game, while picking up one assist.  Andryshak finished his hat-trick while picking up his sixth assist of the game.  At the final buzzer the Lakers would claim an 18-8 victory over the Cannoneers.

Following Wednesday's contest, the Lakers will hit the road when they travel to Genesee Community College on Saturday, April 15 to face the 8-2 Cougars in a NJCAA Region III match-up.  Saturday's Game is scheduled to begin at 1PM.
