CANANDAIGUA — Dave Stein, the longtime head coach of the Finger Lakes Community College men's lacrosse team, and his assistant coach, Hector Alejandro, were honored by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) as the Region III Coaching Staff of the Year.
Under Stein, in his 14th season as the Lakers head coach, FLCC went 5-8 overall and 2-2 during the 2017 season, often competing with 13 student-athletes on the roster.
Despite a lack of depth on the roster, the Lakers won three out of four games from April 9-17 to get to 5-4 on the year.
Freshman Tate Stewart (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan), an attacker, was named to the All-Region III Second Team. He led the team in points (53) and goals (45), and was fifth in assists (8). He appeared in and started all 13 games, scoring a team-most six man-up goals while scooping up 21 groundballs.
Six times, Stewart scored four or more goals in a game, including a career-high eight points on seven goals with one assist during an 18-8 win over Jefferson CC (April 12). He added five goals with an assist in a 13-12 win over SUNY Broome CC (April 2), and during an 18-13 loss to Hudson Valley CC (April 19).
