DRYDEN, NY -- The Finger Lakes Lacrosse team defeated Tompkins Cortland Community College on Thursday night by the score of 19-11. Finger Lakes is now 4-4 on the season. They are also 2-0 in MSAC play and 3-0 in Region III play.
The Lakers surrendered the opening goal of the game against the Panthers. That would be Tompkins Cortland's only lead though as Finger Lakes answered back with goals by Matt Miller and Joshua Spence to lead 2-1 after the first quarter.
Finger Lakes would exchange goals with Tompkins Cortland in the second quarter. Matt Miller scored all four goals for the Lakers, but the Panthers had an answer for all but the last and Finger Lakes carried a 6-4 lead into halftime.
In another tightly played quarter, Finger Lakes was able to find the back of the net four times. Tompkins Cortland continued to hang around though. Corey Grace topped the scoring with 30 seconds left to play and Finger Lakes led 10-7 after three.
Tompkins Cortland scored the opening two goals of the fourth quarter to make it a one-goal game, 10-9. Finger Lakes would answer however with eight unanswered goals. Matt Scharr contributed three of them. Roy Young, Matt Miller, Ralph Taliento, Cullen Smith, and Corey Grace all added goals as well. That run would propel Finger Lakers to a 19-11 victory.
Matt Miller continued his hot play, scoring seven goals for the Lakers. Matt Scharr added three goals and two assists for five points. Roy Young added a hat trick and Ralph Taliento had a pair of goals for the Lakers.
Finger Lakes will return to action this Saturday as they travel to Niagara County Community College. The Region III game with the Thunderwolves is scheduled to start at 1pm.
