CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Men's Basketball team defeated Onondaga Community College 88-78 on Saturday. The win concluded the regular season for the Lakers. They finished with a 17-10 record and 7-5 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference.
Dylan Verkey got the scoring going early to with a three pointer to give the Lakers an early lead. They would maintain that lead over the first five minutes of the half. The Lazers would pull ahead briefly, but Matt Scharr would drain a three to give the Lakers the lead right back, 17-16, with eight minutes left in the half. Martin Young would widen the lead with a drive through the Lazer defense. The sophomore finished with four points in the half. Wykeem Spicer would give the Lakers a defensive spark with a pair of late steals. One led to a run-out and easy basket by Dylan Verkey. John Hyde would drain a three in the dying seconds of the half to send Finger Lakes to the locker rooms leading 34-26.
Brandon Bullock led Finger Lakes at the half with nine points and six rebounds. Will Arberry added six points and two blocks in the half. Overall as a team, Finger Lakes had six blocks in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Lakers got out to a fast start in the second half. Brandon Bullock hit a three pointer on the opening possession for Finger Lakes, which sparked a 7-0 run. The Lakers would stretch the lead past the 20 point margin seven minutes into the second half when Dylan Verkey would steal the ball and take it all the way for the layup, making it 51-30. The lead would stay in that range for the next eight minutes of play. The pace of play also opened up. Finger Lakes found themselves with a lot of fast break baskets. Kaleem Edwards would have a pair of slam dunks and Luke Logsdon added a dunk of his own. Finger Lakes would lead 80-59 with five minutes to play. Onondaga would not go away however. The Lazers went on an 11-0 run over the next minute to make it a 10 point game, 80-70, with four minutes remaining. Dylan Verkey would end the run with an acrobatic bucket under the basket. Finger Lakes would hold the margin the rest of the game, going on to win the contest 88-78.
Dylan Verkey led the Lakers with 20 points. He also added four assists and five steals for Finger Lakes. Brandon Bullock and Will Arberry each finished with 19 points. Bullock added 12 rebounds, while Arberry had six. Kaleem Edwards added 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and five blocks. Edwards tied his career-high in blocks which happened last season against Onondaga. Finger Lakes finished with a season-high eight blocks as a team.
The Lakers will continue on to post-season basketball. Their first stop is the Mid-State Athletic Conference Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by Tompkins Cortland Community College and starts Friday night. The Lakers will be the #3 seed and take on the #2 seeded Corning Community College.
