Lakers Hold Off Cayuga

CANANDAIGUA -- Behind Will Arberry's 23 points, the Finger Lakes Men's Basketball team defeated Cayuga 86-76 on Saturday in Mid-State Athletic Conference action. With the win, the Lakers improve their record to 13-6 and 3-1 in conference play.

Finger Lakes got out to an early lead against the Spartans on Saturday. They distributed the ball well and led 9-3, five minutes in. Kaleem Edwards would have a pair of first half blocks, the second leading to a fast break where he found Dylan Verkey under the basket for the easy layup to make it 23-14 halfway through the period.. Edwards had five assists in the half. The Lakers would push the lead to 10 with five minutes left. Matt Scharr would find Will Arberry cutting to the basket for the easy points and a 31-21 lead. Cayuga would fight to stay in the game and cut the Finger Lakes lead down to three, 40-37, at the half.

Will Arberry had 12 points in the half. Finger Lakes had even scoring in the half. Every player who recorded a minute scored a basket for the Lakers.  Brandon Bullock had seven assists in the first half. 

Cayuga would open the second with a couple of buckets to draw the game to a 42-42 tie. Dylan Verkey would end the tie quickly with a three pointer to give the Lakers a 45-42 lead two minutes in. Kaleem Edwards would then bring the crowd to its feet as the lane would open up for him. Edwards drove to the basket and threw it down with a tomahawk dunk. Cayuga would not go away, however. They would work the margin back to a single point, but Matt Scharr would give the Lakers some breathing room. Finger Lakes would push the lead to double-digits thanks to Scharr. He would make another three, which followed a three pointer by freshman John Hyde and Finger Lakes led 61-51 with 12 minutes to play. The Lakers would hold that lead for the rest of the half. The Spartans would make a late run, but Scharr would make his third three pointer in the half to widen the margin as the Lakers would continue onto a 86-76 lead.

Will Arberry finished with 23 points on the afternoon. It was the fourth time this season that Arberry has reached the 20 point plateau. Matt Scharr had a career-high 14 points off of four thee pointers, also a career-high. Brandon Bullock finished with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds and seven steals. John Hyde finished with a career-high 11 points and Kaleem Edwards added 10 points, with seven rebounds and seven assists.

The Lakers are on the road next week as they travel to Onondaga Community College and Tompkins Cortland Community College. First stop is Wednesday in Syracuse as the Lakers take on the Lazers of Onondaga Community College. Tipoff is set for 6pm.
