Lakers Continue Streak; Defeat Fulton Montgomery

CANANDAIGUA -- Finger Lakes Community College improved their win steak to 4 games in topping Fulton Montgomery Community College 62-56 in Men's Basketball on Saturday. With the win, Finger Lakes improves their record to 9-5 on the season and 5-4 in Region III play.

The Lakers got off to a fast start, holding a 10-4 lead four minutes into the game. The Lakers used a pair of three-pointers by Dylan Verkey. Brandon Bullock also had an easy layup off of a full court pass by Kaleem Edwards. The Lakers grew the lead to 18-7 behind strong shooting from deep. They started the game 4-5 from three-point territory. Finger Lakes would hold a double-digit lead for most of the half, but the Raiders kept fighting. they were able to narrow the margin to nine, and Finger Lakes took a 41-32 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

Brandon Bullock led the Lakers at the break with 13 points. He was aided by Dylan Verkey who had 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Will Arberry chipped in eight points and Kaleem Edwards added five assists for Finger Lakes.

The first couple minutes of the second half were played at a very high pace. Fulton Montgomery continued to chip away at the Lakers margin getting it down to six points with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Will Arberry would hit a pair of free throws to make it a 54-49 game with eight minutes to play. Arberry was 5-7 on the line in the second half and 6-8 for the game. The Fulton Montgomery comeback was complete as they tied the game with 2:30 left in the game. Finger Lakes would take the lead back right away as Brandon Bullock found Kaleem Edwards open under the basket on an inbounds play to give the Lakers a 58-56 lead. The Finger Lakes defense would hold from here on out, shutting out the Raiders for the final two minutes and thirty seconds of the game. Kaleem Edwards would put an exclamation point on the contest when he would pick off the Raider pass and finish with the dunk on the other end with over a minute to play. The defense would hold for Finger Lakes as they continued to a 62-56 victory.

Brandon Bullock finished with a game-high 17 points. He also added eight rebounds and four steals for the Lakers. Will Arberry also had eight rebounds to go with is 15 points. Dylan Verkey joined Bullock and Arberry in double-figures with 12 points. Kaleem Edwards filled the statsheet with a team-high nine rebounds along with eight points, six assists, four steals and two blocks. Freshman John Hyde had five points, going perfect from the field, in a career-high 17 minutes played.

The Lakers will have a couple of weeks off before returning to action. There next game is not until January 4, 2014. They will resume the season on the road at Schenectady County Community College. The game is scheduled to start at 3pm.
