CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Men's Basketball team lost to nationally ranked Herkimer County Community College 74-56 on Sunday. The loss leveled the Lakers' record at 5-5. Finger Lakes is 2-4 in regional play.
Herkimer came out fast in the first half against the Lakers. They opened the game on a 5-0 run before Nic Cesar converted a three point play to get Finger Lakes on the board. Finger Lakes turned up the defensive pressure and forced consecutive steals. Both times Dylan Verkey made the layup on the fast break and brought the Lakers back to within two points, 16-14. Nic Cesar would tie the game at 19-19 with a three pointer, but Herkimer would answer with a three pointer of their own. That would spark a 10-0 run for the Generals who led 29-19 with five minutes to play in the half. They would extend that lead and carry a 41-28 lead into the break.
Verkey led the Lakers at the half in scoring with nine points. Nic Cesar added eight for Finger Lakes. Kaleem Edwards had a game-high three assists at the half.
Finger Lakes tried to use the three ball to get back into the game in the second half. Nic Cesar would knock a three down two minutes into the half to make it a 10 point game, 45-35. Herkimer would answer, however, and drive the margin further apart. Finger Lakes would not get it any closer. Cesar's second three of the half made it 54-41 with 13 minutes remaining, but the Generals' offense did not stop. They made five three pointers in the half, 11 on the game, on their way to a 74-56 victory.
Nic Cesar led the Lakers in scoring with a game-high 20 points. It was the third time this season the sophomore guard has scored 20 or more. Brandon Bullock had four steals and six rebounds and Will Arberry added seven rebounds for Finger Lakes.
The Lakers have two weeks off to prepare for their next game. That will come on Saturday, December 7 at Troy, NY. The Lakers will take on Hudson Valley Community College with a 3pm start time.
