BINGHAMTON — The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team capped an undefeated weekend with a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Broome Community College Sunday afternoon.
The Lakers (16-22, 12-9 Region III) swept the Hornets by scores of 8-7 and 4-2, taking both games after rallying from early deficits.
FLCC took all four weekend games vs. Broome.
Freshman Chris Karam (Elmira, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) was 2-for-3 with a run scored, sophomore Ryan Mullen (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and sophomore Austin Teets (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the opener.
Freshman Trevor Bradshaw (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) also was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base in the Game 1 win.
Trailing 6-0 entering the third, sophomore Garrett Cunningham (Auburn, N.Y./Union Springs) came on in relief and held Broome to one run on three hits over four effective innings to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Sophomore Stephen Fredendall (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) came on in the seventh and struck out two batters during a scoreless inning to earn the save.
The Lakers chipped away at the deficit, scoring in each of the last five innings to complete the comeback. FLCC scored two runs in the third on a two-run single by Cooper, and two more in the fourth on a two-run single from Otto.
Teets delivered an RBI double in the fifth to trim the deficit to 6-5, but the Hornets got one run back in the bottom of the inning. It would be their last run of the opener.
Sophomore Mike Magnanti (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) pushed across a run on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly, and Cooper's RBI single knotted the score at 7-all.
In the seventh, Karam led off with a double and scored the go-ahead run on Mullen's RBI single.
In the nightcap, Karam was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and freshman Jake Rugaber (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was 1-for-3 with an RBI for FLCC. Mullen and Richer each went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman Evan Pappalardo (Albion, N.Y./Charles D'Amico) allowed two earned runs on five hits to earn the win.
Once again, the Lakers had to rally against the Hornets. Trailing 2-0 heading to the sixth, Mullen and Richer each had RBI singles and Rugaber drove home the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 lead.
In the seventh, FLCC tacked on an insurance run as Cooper led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, and got to third on a groundout. Cooper scored on Karam's RBI single for a 4-2 lead.
Pappalardo worked around a leadoff single in the home half of the seventh, inducing a double play and getting a strikeout swinging to end the game.
The Lakers return to action Tuesday, hosting Genesee Community College for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
