BINGHAMTON, NY -- The Finger Lakes Community College Baseball team swept the SUNY Broome Hornets on Saturday by the scores of 6-4 and 8-7. With the win, Finger Lakes improves their regional record to 6-8. The Lakers are 12-16 on the season and also 3-1 in Mid-State Athletic Conference play.
Finger Lakes fell behind early in Game 1, but bounced back to tie the game in the third inning. With two outs, Matt Ashley tripled to keep the inning going. He scored on a Danny D'Eletto single. D'Eletto then stole second base and scored when Max Franzone doubled to tie the game at 2-2. After a quick defensive inning with Austin Miller on the mound, the Lakers got the offense going again. Cameron Heasley led the inning off by reaching on a Broome error. He scored on a Kevin Carpentier double. Carpentier would later score to make it 4-2 Lakers. Miller would hold the Hornets offense down for the next couple innings before the Lakers were able to tack on two more in the seventh. Kenny Urbanik led the inning off with a single to left field. Matt Ashley would be hit by the pitch. He was pinch ran for by Hunter Hey and they executed a double steal to get runners on second and third with no outs. Both would be brought home on a Max Franzone single. With a 6-2 lead, Broome was able to push across a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, but Matt Weinberg would shut the door on the mound for the 6-4 Lakers victory.
Max Franzone finished with a pair of hits and three runs batted in for Finger Lakes. Matt Ashley had a triple and Kevin Carpentier added a double. Freshman Austin Miller pitched into the seventh inning for the Lakers. He allowed just six hits and struck out six in earning his first collegiate win.
The Lakers would once again come from behind in Game 2. Down 1-0 in the fourth, Cameron Heasley led the inning off with his second single of the game. He would score on a Dalton Murray double, tying the game at 1-1. Broome would answer with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lakers offense answered back to take the lead in the fifth. Matt Ashley led the inning off with a walk. Max Franzone got hit by the pitch to put runners at first and second with one out. One run came in when Ryan Juergens reached on an error. Heasley hit his third single of the game to tied the game and Franzone scored the go-ahead run when Dalton Murray reached on an error. The Lakers led 4-3 going into the bottom of the fifth. The Hornets would not go away however. Broome pushed across four runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 7-4 after five innings of play. Matt Ashley led the inning off with a double. Following a Danny D'Eletto walk, Ashley scored when Max Franzone reached on an error. The Lakers would use a combination of Hornet miscues to take the lead back at 8-7. Derick Fera would hold the Hornet offense at seven runs and Finger Lakes would go on to win 8-7.
Freshman Cameron Heasley finished the game with a career-high three hits. Dalton Murray added two hits, including a double. Matt Ashley also doubled for Finger Lakes. Derick Fera earned his third win of the season throwing three shutout innings in relief for the Lakers.
Finger Lakers will remain on the road this Tuesday as they travel to Corning to take on the Red Barons. First pitch of the Region III and Mid-State Athletic Conference doubleheader is set for 2pm.
