Lakers Win Streak Stopped by Thunderwolves

CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes baseball team dropped a doubleheader on Saturday against the Thunderwolves of Niagara County CC. Niagara took game one by the score of 3-1 and won the nightcap 7-2. Finger Lakes is now 6-14 on the season and 2-2 in Region 3 play.

Game one saw a strong pitching effort from Kevin Close. The freshman from Lodi, NY allowed just five hits while throwing the complete game. Niagara carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning before the Lakers bats began to make some noise. Joey Simmons led off the inning with a single up the middle. With one out, Dylan Catlin would single to right to move Simmons to second base. Branden Rhodes would single as well to drive in Simmons and cut the lead to 3-1. However, unfortunately for the Lakers, the next two batters would strikeout to end the game.

The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in game two. Already down 1-0, Aaron Freida led off the home half of the first by reaching on an error. Corey Galletta would single him to third. It was the first of two hits on the day for Galletta. Nate Eastman would drive in Freida with a single and Rhodes did the same for Galletta. The inning would end with the Lakers holding a 2-1 lead.

Niagara would then answer with a run in the second and third en route to a 7-2 victory. Eastman pitched two scoreless innings, with two strikeouts, to end the game for Finger Lakes. Rhodes finished the doubleheader by going a combined 4-6 and now leads the Lakers in hitting at a 0.412 average.

Finger Lakes will travel to Niagara County today for a doubleheader. First pitch from Sanborn, NY is scheduled for 1pm.
