Finger Lakes Drops Doubleheader to Monroe CC

By Jimmy Habecker

ROCHESTER, NY. – Finger Lakes dropped a pair of games to Monroe CC on Thursday by the scores of 10-0 and 3-1. The losses drop the Lakers record to 2-10 on the season.

Finger Lakes applied pressure early in the first game. Aaron Freida led off the game with a single and that was followed by a Branden Rhodes flare. Joey Simmons bunted them over to second and third, however, they would be stranded there. The Laker offense struggled the rest of the game against the Tribunes. Simmons added a single, as did Danny D'Eletto, but they were not able to do anything once reaching base. Stephen Lewis started the game on the mound for Finger Lakes by pitching three scoreless frames, however, the Tribunes would get to him in the fourth for five runs. Lewis took the loss and now sits at 1-2 on the season.

Freida would get the Lakers going fast in game two as well. He led off the nightcap with a walk and moved to second on a Corey Galletta groundout. With Simmons at the plate, Freida stole third and scored when Simmons grounded out to shortstop. Once again though, the Lakers offense would go quiet. The sole producer for the rest of the game would be Troy Loparco. The sophomore from Sedona, AZ, singled and stole a base in the second, tripled to deep right center in the fifth, and walked in the seventh. Loparco finished the day 2-2 with a walk. Freida also had a single for Finger Lakes. Kevin Close went the distance on the hill for the Lakers, and did a good job at limiting Monroe's 11 hits to just three runs.

Finger Lakes will open Mid-State Athletic Conference play and the home slate of its schedule on Friday against the Cannoneers of Jefferson CC. First pitch from the Finger Lakes Community College campus is scheduled for 2pm.
