Baseball – Lakers Sweep Road Doubleheader At Corning, Bats Come To Life

CORNING, NY. – The Finger Lakes Community College Lakers (5-13) swept a road doubleheader this afternoon by taking down the Corning Community College Red Barons by scores of 13-3 (game one) and 20-17 (game two).

The Lakers were highlighted by the pitching efforts of Sawyer Korb (Hornell, NY) in the game one victory. Korb tossed a complete game, allowing just 1 earned run on 3 hits while striking out 7.

Finger Lakes 13-run offensive performance consisted of a slew of different hitters reaching the 2-hit column this afternoon. These hitters included; Anthony Gonzalez (Rochester, NY), Justin Stowell (Horseheads, NY), Corey Cowen (West Edmeston, NY), Chris Fazio (Staten Island, NY), and Matt Tyma (Ontario, NY). Along with their 2-hit games, Fazio and Tyma each drove in 3 runs apiece. Dominick Beniamino (Geneva, NY) and Hector Mitaynes (Rochester, NY) each added a pair of RBI's for the Lakers in the win.

The second game featured a major offensive explosion out of Finger Lakes. The Red Barons bats were just as strong. Game two consisted of four different lead changes. The Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Corning answered with 6 runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Finger Lakes regained the lead in the top of third (11-6) by scoring 8 runs. The 8-run inning was highlighted by a Stowell grand slam. The Red Barons answered the Lakers with 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning, narrowing the score to 11-10. Corning managed to recapture the lead in the fourth, 13-12. The Lakers then answered the Red Barons in the top of the fifth with 6 runs. After building an 18-13 lead in the fifth, Finger Lakes never looked back the rest of the game.

In the game two winning effort, the Lakers received 3 hits each from Stowell, Eddie Tagliareni (Mexico, NY), and Cowen. Along with his 3 hits and key grand slam home run, Stowell produced 5 RBI's with his bat. Tagliareni was also very productive, driving in 4 runs. Along with his 3-hit performance, Cowen delivered a solo home run, accumulated 3 RBI's, and scored 4 runs. Branden Rhodes (Victor, NY) and Tyma each added 2 hits and 3 RBI's for Finger Lakes.

On the mound in game two, Dan Baker (Spencerport, NY) notched the win for the Lakers. Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY) picked up the save.

Finger Lakes will be back in action on Monday (4/9) when they take on Niagara County Community College in a home doubleheader. Game one is slated to begin at 2:00 pm.
