Baseball - Lakers Swept By Allegany In Doubleheader

CUMBERLAND, MD. – The Finger Lakes Community College Lakers (0-4, 0-0 MSAC) lost a pair of games today to Allegany College of Maryland by scores of 12-2 (game one) and 12-5 (game two).

In game one, the Lakers had a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, citing great pitching behind starter Nick French (sophomore, Lansing, NY). French pitched 4 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing just 3 earned runs. Trailing 1-0 going into the fourth inning, Finger Lakes tied the game when sophomore first baseman Justin Stowell (Horseheads, NY) crossed the plate as a result of an errant throw by Allegany's catcher (Stowell moved from first base to third on a passed ball and later scored after Allegany's catcher threw the ball away in an attempt to throw him out at third). The Lakers scored their second run in the fifth when Corey Galletta (second baseman, freshman, Oswego, NY) scored on an Allegany throwing error. Finger Lakes lead was short lived. The Lakers bullpen failed to hold the lead as Allegany scored 11 runs in the final two innings of today's contest to secure the win.

In game two, the Lakers built yet another early lead against Allegany by scoring 3 runs in the second inning. Finger Lakes squandered the lead as Allegany would go on to score 8 unanswered runs until the 6th inning. In the sixth and seventh innings, the Lakers showed signs of mounting a comeback as Stowell led off the sixth with a single and was later driven in by a Dominick Beniamino (infielder, sophomore, Geneva, NY) single (closing the gap to 8-4). In the seventh, freshman first baseman Chris Fazio (Staten Island, NY) led off the inning with a double for Finger Lakes and was later driven in by an Anthony Gonzalez (infielder, freshman, Rochester, NY) single (closing the score to 8-5). After Fazio crossed the plate, the Lakers momentum was halted as Allegany went on to score 4 more runs.

Finger Lakes will return to the field tomorrow (Wednesday, 3/14) for a road matchup against Frederick Community College (of Maryland). Game time is slated for 3:00 pm.
